Low-Mass and Metal-Poor Gamma-Ray Burst Host Galaxies

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are cosmologically distributed, very energetic and very transient sources detected in the γ-ray domain. The identification of their x-ray and optical afterglows allowed so far the redshift measurement of 150 events, from z = 0.01 to z = 6.29. For about half of them, we have some knowledge of the properties of the parent galaxy. At high redshift (z > 2), absorption lines ...

The Nature of the Host Galaxies for Gamma-Ray Bursts

It has been suggested recently that the rate of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) is proportional to the star formation rate in the universe. In this paper, we study the nature of GRB hosts expected in this scenario. We improve upon previous studies by incorporating a luminosity function for the GRBs, as required by observations. This model provides a good match to the observed number counts of GRBs as a...

A Survey of the Host Galaxies of Gamma-Ray Bursts

We used 45 HST/STIS orbits in Cycle 9 to obtain deep images of the host galaxies of eleven gamma-ray bursts. Our goals are to study the morphologies of the host galaxies, to obtain precise locations of gamma-ray bursts within their host galaxies, and to determine star-formation rates in the hosts. We present preliminary results for GRB 980425/SN1998bw, GRB 980613, and GRB 9809703.

SCUBA Observations of the Host Galaxies of Gamma-Ray Bursts

In recent years, a population of galaxies with huge infrared luminosities and dust masses has been discovered in the submillimetre. Observations suggest that the AGN contribution to the luminosities of these submillimetre-selected galaxies is low; instead their luminosities are thought to be mainly due to strong episodes of star formation following merger events. Our current understanding of GR...

The submillimetre properties of gamma-ray burst host galaxies

Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) accompany the deaths of some massive stars and hence, because massive stars are short-lived, are a tracer of star formation activity. Given that GRBs are bright enough to be seen to very high redshifts and detected even in dusty environments, they should therefore provide a powerful probe of the global star formation history of the Universe. The potential o...
